From our homes, through the Beatworx office to the festival! We are aware that what we do can hurt the environment in some ways. That is why we want our steps to be as small an environmental burden as possible, and we participate in ecological procedures that make sense and return the environment. We need to maintain this balance.

A separate zone in the campsite for those who want to live in a cleaner environment and sort all their waste.

The number of so-called water bags, which make it possible to pre-stock water for the duration of the festival, has increased. This reduces the amount of imported water in tanks.

LET IT ROLL SAVE THE RAVE

The sorting line at the festival site helps to better sort out the overall waste of the festival. The line sorts plastic and PET, aluminium, organic and gastro waste. Paper and glass are collected from the festival grounds only and go straight into their designated containers.

OUR PROJECT ROLLIN’ GREEN

We covered our ecological and environmental initiative with the Rollin’ Green project. We mainly deal with how to protect the environment as much as possible before, during, and after the festival and thus reduce our ecological footprint. Some of the activities we do as part of the project are invisible to you – our fans – to maximize your festival experience. That’s why at the festival you will find our Rollin’ Green Point, where you can come and find out about our project and how you can contribute to its success. It is also important for us to educate you in this area, so you have the opportunity to participate in our workshops, which we organize at Rollin’ Green Point.

WASTE ELIMINATION AND SORTING

The first area we deal with in the project is waste elimination and sorting. As a festival city, we create up to 80 tons of waste in 3 days. With each new year of the festival, thanks to your active cooperation, we can reduce this number and at the same time sort even better.

  • At the festival’s “green points” we sort plastic and PET bottles, aluminium, bio-waste and gastro waste. Now you won’t find a paper bin at the festival – the festival produces almost no clean used paper that can be recycled. Instead, we sort paper in the backstage area, including glass from the bars.
  • You won’t find plastic or any other straws at the festival. We can party without them and thus save more waste.
  • The food is available on biodegradable palm leaf dishes and the cutlery is made from renewable materials, specifically wood, which can be composted after use. Thanks to that we save other disposable plastics.
  • Our stallholders sort used oil and gastro-waste into special containers, thus ensuring efficient disposal and preventing contamination of sorted waste.
  • In the food zones, there are containers for gastro-waste, into which we sort dishes made of palm leaves, including cutlery and napkins

WHERE DOES THE WAST FROM THE FESTIVAL GO?

  • Aluminum scrap (eg Red Bull cans) travels to the automotive industry, where it is processed and used in the body or rim of a wheel
  • Biowaste incl. plates of palm leaves travel to composting plants and biogas plants. Composting plants process the waste and use it to fertilize other crops, and biogas produces biogas that is used to produce heat or energy.
  • The separated waste (plastic, glass, paper) travels to specialized processing companies where they process the waste correctly and then offer its recycled material for further use.
  • Used oil from stallholders is collected in special containers and then handed over to a specialist company, which uses it to produce methyl ester (added to diesel as biofuel). Other uses are in the cosmetics industry, rubber industry, and of course in the chemical industry.

  • Tents and sleeping bags, which are in usable condition and handed over to the info stand at the festival, are donated to the Salvation Army social facility.

CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION

The carbon footprint calculates the number of greenhouse gases that are released into the air during a certain human activity. Specifically connected with the festival, it is, for example, driving a car, flying a plane, or other activity in which energy is consumed (production of goods). A high carbon footprint harms climate change, which is why we strive to keep it as low as possible.

  • We provide a shuttle bus, which you can use for transport to the festival
  • At the festival, you will find a bicycle rental that you can use for transport in the area
  • When buying plane tickets, we contribute to the so-called offset compensation*

* Offset compensation negates the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions that we emit into the atmosphere. The offset will be created either by financing the planting of greenery or by supporting renewable energy sources (solariums, windmills, biomass).

REDUCTION OF WATER CONSUMPTION

In 2022, we have increased the number of so-called water supply bags at the festival, which allow us to pre-stock water for the duration of the festival. Thus, it is now possible to draw most of the water from the local water supply. This reduces the amount of water imported in tankers from neighbouring towns. Even so, we are trying to conserve water, so please conserve with us – e.g. drink water while brushing your teeth.


  • Gradually, we place taps with a timer on the festival, which automatically turns off the water
  • Places with ordinary, manual taps are guarded by a volunteer. By stopping water responsibly yourself when not in use, you help us save water. Interesting fact – by switching off the water while brushing your teeth, you will save 560 liters of water per week


RECYCLING/UPCYCLING

Proper sorting also includes the proper disposal of separated waste. The best solution is to use the thing several times, ie recycle it so that it doesn’t serve only once (eg a paper bag). When this is not possible with something, it is time for “upcycling” which is improving the existing thing for another, even for a different purpose.


  • Some materials used to build the stage (PVC banners) are recycled and used to produce eco merchandise, so you can buy a piece of the festival (sunglasses case, bottle case or crossbody wallet).
  • We collect and donate tents and sleeping bags left at the festival to people in need
  • In 2018, plastic was sorted at the festival, which, thanks in part to the CYRKL platform, became PET filament for 3D printing (= material processed after PET recycling and intended for second use). From this, the Kaleidoscope statue was created, which became the winning design of the competition of the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. At the International Engineering Fair in Brno, this sculpture was auctioned for CZK 160,000.

**** in 2023, there were logistical difficulties in waste collection due to heavy rain in the last days of the festival, so everything did not make it to be brought to the sorting line. At the same time, some waste was contaminated by water and mud.l

OUR GOALS:

  • Focus on improper disposal of cigarette butts – since cigarette butts take up to 15 years to decompose and are very polluting to the environment, we would like to implement enough ashtrays at the festival
  • Festival without disposable plastics – ie without straws, plastic bottles, disposable cups, dishes, and cutlery.
  • Reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon footprint through car sharing, public transport, or eco taxis.
  • Process all bio and gastro waste for further use at the festival.
  • Reduce water consumption. Install timers and aerators at all festival locations.
  • Educate visitors to higher environmental responsibility through workshops and discussions.

WASTE COMPOSITION

  • 2.28 tons of sorted plastic saved 0.9 km of natural resources
  • 3 trees were saved by separating 740 kg of paper as 1 ton of separated paper saves up to 2 tons of wood
  • 700 kg of PET was sorted, which can be reused for the production of up to 500 gymsacks


WASHABLE REUSABLE PLASTIC CUPS

  • By using washable cups, if we assume the use of at at least  5 events, we will save about 7.5 tons of plastic waste
  • However, the need to transport cups for washing and storage has a negative impact on the festival’s carbon footprint

CARBON FOOTPRINT

  • Based on calculations, transportation is responsible for 77% of the festival’s carbon footprint, with only artists traveling a total of about 568,000 km
  • About 19% of the festival’s carbon footprint is due to waste
  • Fuel consumption for generators has minimal effect
  • The best solution is to travel by shuttle bus or bicycle (0% emissions)
  • One flight around Europe will produce almost 4 times more greenhouse gases than taking a bus


HOW CAN YOU HELP AT THE FESTIVAL?

  • Recycle correctly – when you’re recycling correctly, the waste goes where it needs to. If it isn’t, the waste might damage the rest of the waste and therefore end in mixed waste
  • Save water – close the taps after using them and don’t waste water. Shower only for as long as it’s needed.
  • Bring the tents and sleeping bags that you don’t need anymore to the info stand. We will give them to Salvation Army so they can still use them.

HOW TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE?

  • Don’t buy the stuff you don’t need
  • Recycle
  • Use reusable cup/bottle
  • When grocery shopping, bring your bag 
  • Be sure to close the taps to not waste water
  • Use public transportation
  • Give the things you don’t need to other people or swap them with someone
  • Avoid packaging made out of more than one material
  • Shop local groceries that don’t travel across the world
